5 of the best things to see and do in Broome

From pearl farming to open-air cinemas

The Business Chicks team and 140 Premium members have just returned from Broome, Western Australia for our annual Movers and Breakers conference. We spent three of the most magical days learning, connecting, and experiencing the beauty of the West. We’ve compiled our list of the best things to see and do while holidaying in Broome. Read on for our picks

1. Watch the sunset on Cable Beach

Yes, it is the thing to do in Broome, but with its 22 kilometres of soft white sand, Cable Beach is one of the best places in Western Australia to watch the sunset. Climb aboard one of the many camel rides or find your own patch of sand to take in the colourful skies over the Indian Ocean.

2. Visit Willie Creek Pearl Farm

One of the stops on our conference itinerary, Willie Creek Pearls is a working pearl farm that’s been in operation for 30 years, and has the honour of being recognised as one of the most awarded tour attractions in Western Australia.

We learned about the process of cultured pearl farming and saw first-hand how the most valuable pearls in the world are produced on their award-winning eco-tour. Our attendees were lucky enough to take home a piece of Western Australia from Willie Creek Pearls’ stunning jewellery collections, and they have extended their offer to you too. 3. Kayak with turtles

Explore Broome’s warm turquoise waters on one of Broome Adventure Co’s turtle kayaking tours. You’ll discover diverse bird and marine life – turtles and depending on the season, Manta Rays and Humpback Whales too – while you cruise past the spectacular coastal scenery.

4. Take in an open-air movie

What better way to take advantage of Broome’s balmy nights than watching a flick at Sun Pictures, the world’s oldest operating open-air cinema. Don’t be fooled by its age, it’s now equipped with digital projectors and screens the latest blockbuster releases. If you’re heading along, don’t forget you’re in the tropics, so you’ll need to wear appropriate clothing and bring insect repellent for the mosquitoes and sandflies.

5. Visit the Staircase to the Moon night markets

The Staircase Markets are held in Broome over the two nights of the full moon during April and October. The Staircase to the Moon is a natural phenomenon where reflections of the moon rising on the exposed mudflats at low tide create the optical illusion of a staircase reaching up to the moon. Visitors wander around the colourful local stalls under the stars, listen to local live music, and sample the cuisine while taking in the phenomenon. If you’re lucky enough to be in Broome to visit the night markets, don’t miss out on trying the amazing Lumpia (Filipino spring rolls) too.

With thanks to our Movers and Breakers conference partner, Willie Creek Pearls.
