Pack a sports bra, you’re gonna need it

To anyone a bit #meh about personal development, Tony Robbin’s positivity might scare the beejezus out of you — but for personal and professional development junkies like me, he’s the bees knees.

He’s so motivating he could even make Vanessa Sunshine crack a smile!

[That’s a Bachelor reference, for the uninitiated].

That’s why I was so thrilled to attend Tony Robbin’s Unleash the Power Within in Sydney last weekend.

Lots of people have asked me about the conference, and while it’s impossible to distill 50 hours of content into one article, I thought I’d jot down a few key core lessons and share the goodness with the Business Chicks community.

Here goes nothing:

Tip #1: Success is 80% psychology and 20% mechanics.

According to Tony, success in life is 80% psychology and 20% mechanics — and the way WE THINK is usually the chokehold that prevents our success.

How so? Well, we tell ourselves thousands of negative thoughts a day, and all these thoughts carry consequences.

The takeaway? Change your internal soundtrack because what we consider possible or impossible, has nothing to do with your capability and has everything to do with your beliefs.

Leaders and superstars like Emma Isaacs, Ariana Huffington, Bill Gates, and Serena Williams have been able to find unparalleled success because they took control of their mindset and focused on the psychology of winning instead of letting fear take over.

It’s true of almost every successful person.

Tip #2: Get into your peak state.

So, you’ve probably heard of makeup primer, but what about priming your life for success?

‘Priming’ is a morning routine that takes around ten minutes. It’s a potent mix of mindfulness, gratitude and goal visualisation every morning to help you reach a peak state of productivity.

Tony believes that by starting your day this way, you can “change your physical state and, with it, your state of mind”.

Think of it as your mental green smoothie!

Tip #3: Fear stops us from moving forward

What stops us from moving forward? Fear.

If you’re an achiever, Tony says you probably call it ‘stress’.

The way he looks at it? Stress is fear.

We all experience fear in some context during our lives: fear of being hurt, fear of stuffing up, fear of success, fear of love, fear of rejection, fear of being alone, or fear of the big unknown.

This is totally normal — it’s hard-wired in all human beings.

So, what’s the best way to deal with fear according to big T?

You must learn to dance with it.

So, every time you’re feeling a wee-bit stressed, remember personal growth happens when we do the things we’re stressed about.

Tip #4: Don’t rely on others for your happiness

Hoping you can put your life on cruise control and be happy thanks to the people in your orbit?

It doesn’t work like that.

According to Tony, “never rely on your environment for happiness”.

If you’re waiting for others to make you happy, you’ll be up shit creek without a paddle (my French, not his!).

Instead, the secret to happiness is progress.

“Progress equals happiness.”

Tip #5: Hone in on your ultimate goal

Most people plod their way through life, dragging our tired bodies through everything life throws in our direction.

Instead, Tony said you must truly direct your focus and get laser-focussed about what you want.

This means you have to have goals for your life beyond mere survival.

In order to start truly changing your mindset, you need to hone in on your ultimate goal.

He says: gaining clarity of purpose and identifying your “why” behind the goal is the first step on your journey to success.

Tip #6: Always pack a sports bra

You know the drill at most conferences?

You sit for hours.

Not at Unleash the Power Within. We danced, we sang and were rarely sitting for more than 30 minutes.

In fact, the energy was at fever pitch for more than 15 hours each day of the conference.

One person even clocked over 30,000 steps on their fit bit in one day — from their seat!

Take it from me…always pack a sports bra!
