"Comparison is the death of creativity"

I began my professional life as a Graphic Designer working for advertising agencies both in Australia and the UK. In 2014 I created my business, Artfolk, which provides art tuition excellence by engaging participants in skill based creative workshops that encourage personal expression and self-development. With separate tertiary qualifications in Design, Visual Arts, and Education, I also work at QAGOMA galleries and as a casual Primary School Teacher for Education Queensland.

My work life blend

Why are you a Business Chicks member?

BC provides business engagement and connection that I a greatly need and want. As a one-woman business and working casually elsewhere, this membership provides the 'colleagues', connections, and PD opportunities I miss out on normally.

What's been the biggest pinch-me moment of your career?

Doubling my creative business each financial year

How do you deal with setbacks, failures and fear?

Problem solve, learn, consolidate and move ahead

What's the best piece of advice you have ever received?

Risk nothing gain nothing

Which women inspire you and why?

Artemisia and Kahlo for their talent, strength and resilience as artists and progressive women; writers Isabel Allende and Anais Nin; Yayoi Kusama and Elizabeth Gilbert with their recognition of/openness about mental illness and the importance of their art practices.

What's been the biggest challenge you have faced and how did it help shape who you are today?

Covid shut down all my income strands and had me at home alone. I realised that I do too much, push too hard and need to trust and have confidence in the value of what I have to offer.

What are you really good at? (We know this one's hard, you guys! As women, we tend to talk about what everyone else is good at. But now it's your turn.)

Creative thinking and making; procedural thinking and being able to break large activities into smaller achievable goals; welcoming and approachable... I can engage individuals and audiences alike (teaching background); transforming inspirations and ideas into focussed on-theme/brand creative opportunities; loves researching and is a life-long learner

What makes you happy?

Art making, visiting family in Byron, being in the natural environment

What's your definition of success, and how will you know when you've got there? (Go on, aim high!)

Having a go-to business for arts engagement and events.
