I am the Founding Director of Sparro Designs. We are an Australian owned brand and e-commerce business. We exist to ease the load with a range of sleek, strong and seriously smart carry-alls for women to work, and love to work out. Just over 12months ago, I took the plunge and resigned from my 13 year tenure working with global brands to focus on an idea that had been bubbling in my head for far too long. I am sure you'll appreciate, the transition from employee to entrepreneur has proven equal parts incredible and terrifying. Originally from (and love!) Melbourne, I am currently living Chicago.

Determined, loyal and impatient!

My work life blend

Why are you a Business Chicks member?

My business, Sparro Designs, is based in Australia, however i am currently living in Chicagi. I spend most of my week working solo at home. I've quickly realised that not only is this routine incredibly isolating, but equally, how much i miss learning from those around me. Business Chicks offers a great opportunity to stay connected.

What's been the biggest pinch-me moment of your career?

Sparro was recently featured in Sporteluxe. https://sporteluxe.com/the-female-founded-startup-making-designer-bags-for-the-gym/

How do you deal with setbacks, failures and fear?

Usually I have a solid cry, go for a run, then take a big deep breath and then (try to) play on. This tends to work 85% of the time !

What's the best piece of advice you have ever received?

To break the big overwhelming tasks down into smaller bit size pieces. And to just Start!

Which women inspire you and why?

Great question! So many! Right now, Jamila Rizvi is high on my radar. She is one seriously intelligent, articulate and impressive woman, whose work is doing wonderful things to empower and encourage women of the future. Julie Stevanja (Stylerunner). How could you not admire this ladies business brilliance?!

What's been the biggest challenge you have faced and how did it help shape who you are today?

Spending 3 weeks at a China factory, navigating some serious manufacturing issues without a translator, tested me on so many levels. Coming out the other side, with a positive result, taught me how much i am actually capable of!

What are you really good at? (We know this one's hard, you guys! As women, we tend to talk about what everyone else is good at. But now it's your turn.)

I make a great cuppa! Oh, and I'd say my biggest business strength is executing against strategy.

What makes you happy?

Running with friends, early nights and cups of tea

What's your definition of success, and how will you know when you've got there? (Go on, aim high!)

Success for me is about mindset. It's feeling calm and maintaining my composure under pressure! Business wise, it's early days at Sparro, and we definitely haven't touched the sides in terms of what I want to achieve. My first big milestone will be to turn a profit! Longer term, the Sparro providing the single income stream for my family would be a brilliant success!
