Rachel, we’d love to know: how does a personal trainer from Townsville become a three-time WBFF Bikini World Champion and entrepreneur? What made you take the leap from PT to entrepreneur?
I love the quote, “little by little, a little becomes a lot”. I’ve always set myself ambitious long-term goals and challenging short-term goals, knowing that if I give my all to what I’m setting out to achieve, anything is possible. My first WBFF competition was so far outside my comfort zone, but I knew I would learn through the experience. I’ve learned so much through my fitness journey that I have applied to business, and the lessons were much the same. I knew that if I achieved my short-term goals, my ultimate goals would become closer. With this mindset, I’m always focusing on progress and raising the bar on what I demand from myself!
Tell us about starting your business and throwing yourself into the unknown. Where did you begin? How did you build an app? And did you have a business plan or just wing it?
I always had a clear vision of what I wanted to achieve, and have worked backwards from that to find a way to make it happen. I began training clients 1-on-1 in Townsville, and transitioned to taking group classes to facilitate more clients. I fell in love with the feeling of seeing other females embrace fitness, and instantly knew that I wanted to work with as many different ladies as I could. This led me to move online, and share my methods with ladies from different cities. I then started to build my team, and introduced so many incredible people with different skill sets to help me bring my vision to reality. I started providing custom training and nutrition eBooks to my clients, and then began creating my very own App to provide the exact experience that I believe in. This has continued to develop, and I will never stop improving my service and providing my clients with as much value as possible.

There’s a myth of “overnight success” when it comes to being an entrepreneur … but that rarely (if ever) happens. However, it looks like you’ve achieved tremendous growth in a short time. What did it take for you to get where you are today? And in such a saturated market, how did you stand out from the crowd as a fitness entrepreneur and build awareness?
I think a lot of this comes down to where you choose to spend your energy! I’m very aware of not putting any of my time into things outside of my control, and putting as much time as possible into the things that I can. As such, I have invested every ounce of myself into my vision and bringing others onto this journey with me.
Describe a time in your business when you’ve been in the trenches – and how did you pull yourself out?
Business is tough. I spend a lot of time in trenches, which is probably something people don’t see enough of. I have such a high expectation of myself personally, and also on my business. When things go wrong, I make sure that I am doing everything in my power to fix it. As my business grew, I have a larger dependency on technology and with more output, comes more room for error. I think a big part of success is how we deal with adversity. While it’s important to do as much as possible to avoid being in the trenches, it’s equally as important to know how to get out of them.
You seem like a positive person. How do you keep a glass-half-full attitude – and keep moving forward – even on bad days?
I have so much to be grateful for, and will never take the position I am in for granted. I used to dream of being able to do what I am now able to do each day. I am surrounded by amazing people. I am constantly reading the incredible journey’s of ladies in our community. It’s easy to fall into a negative mindset, but I find gratitude as the best way to centre myself.

You’ve now got 40 staff which is an amazing achievement. What are some of the challenges and changes that come with growing a global business?
In order to grow, we often need change. I knew that building my vision would not be possible on my own, and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to build such an exceptional team. We are all constantly evolving, setting new goals and challenging one another to do and be more. What makes this so special is the collective belief in our mission. We have made some big changes in a short period of time, and while this comes with its challenges, it also comes with greater reward.
Tell us why your charity work is so important to you.
To me, success isn’t what I can do for myself, but what I can do for others. I am so proud of the impact that Bodies By Rachel is having on the world. We have donated over $80,000 in the past 12 months to a range of different charities, and have some exciting initiatives planned for the future.
What brings you absolute joy in your work?
I honestly believe that I have one of the most rewarding jobs in the world! Every single day, I see thousands of women from all over the world becoming happier, healthier and more confident. Reading these life-changing stories still gives me goosebumps, and is something that I will never take for granted.
What’s been the most exciting, goosebumpy moment in your entrepreneurial journey so far?
I know it sounds cliche, but there are so many to choose from! I love coming into our HQ everyday and seeing our team so focused on our mission. I am constantly amazed by the achievements of our clients. As proud as I am of all we have achieved to date, I am just as motivated about where we are going as when I first started.
What’s the biggest misconception about entrepreneurship?
I think many people believe that all entrepreneurs are the same. I know that my approach to business is different from a lot of other entrepreneurs. We are all unique, are all motivated by different things, and all have different goals.
If you could give three pieces of advice to a wannabe entrepreneur, what would they be?
Never stop believing in yourself.

Can you give some tips for time-poor people (i.e., every Business Chick!) on how to squeeze some fitness and good nutrition into their day?
Focus on progress, not perfection! It’s all too common for ladies to take the all or nothing approach and make huge changes for a week or two, before reverting to old habits. Focus on sustainable changes that you can implement into your lifestyle – these should be things that you enjoy! While it requires discipline, your fitness journey is something that feels good.
Describe an average morning in the life of Rachel.
I would describe myself as a creature of habit! I always wake up to my baby Nele (a miniature dachshund), and start my day with a coffee and begin to plan the day ahead. Next up I head to the gym for my session, and then get stuck into my work. I really love my routine!
When struggling with time management, I also look to the power of prioritisation. We can always make time for the things we feel are most important. At one stage, I was studying my marketing degree, working a part-time job, building BBR and preparing for my WBFF competition. I used lists to keep me accountable and was really aware of organisation and how I was spending my time. You’ll be amazed at how much you can achieve when you plan your days effectively!
You’ve achieved great success at such a young age. What’s next for you?
2021 we have some big plans for both businesses. I guess you could say, a little bit of a refresh! Stay tuned.
And finally … do you wear activewear in the office?
I wear activewear…EVERYWHERE! You could almost say that we have an activewear only policy at the HQ!
What would your last meal be? Anything sweet! I’m a big dessert gal.
